A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Animated Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story
In this animated journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous gnome he had imagined.
An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.
Naturally, this scenario needs a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
You won’t find very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
